Ihanaa valkoista taikinaa / Homemade Modelling Dough for Christmas Ornaments

2,5 dl ruokasoodaa
1 dl (reilu) maissitärkkelystä
1,5 dl vettä

Sekoita sooda ja maissitärkkelys pienessä kattilassa. Lisää vesi ja sekoita tasaiseksi. Seos on tässä vaiheessa juoksevaa. Kuumenna seosta hellalla keskilämmöllä, sekoita jatkuvasti. Pian seoksesta muotoutuu kiinteä taikina. Peitä kostealla talouspaperilla tai liinalla, anna jäähtyä.

Vaivaa jäähtynyt taikina tasaiseksi. Jos valmis seos on tarttuvaa, käytä muovailussa apuna maissitärkkelystä. Kauli taikina ohueksi ja leikkaa piparkakkumuoteilla koristeita. Voit painaa kaulitun taikinan pintaan kuvioita esimerkiksi puunlehdillä. Tee koristeisiin muovipillillä reiät ripustusnauhoille.

Koveta teokset uunissa 100 asteessa noin 30 min - 1 h. Kääntele koristeita pari kertaa paistamisen aikana, jotta kosteus pääsee haihtumaan tasaisesti.

Valmiit koristeet voi halutessaan maalata, koristella tussilla, leimasimilla... Vain mielikuvitus on rajana tässä hommassa.

We tried a new recipe for making ornaments and loved it. It's really smooth, beautifully white and easy to roll out. It also keeps its shape very well in the oven. You could use these as ornaments or gift tags.

Baking soda and cornstarch dough

1 cup baking soda
1/2 cup cornstarch
3/4 cups water

Mix baking soda and cornstarch in a pot. Add water and mix until smooth. The mixture is very runny at this point. Place the pot on a stove over medium heat, stir constantly. The mixture will start thickening soon. When it's turned into dough, cover it with damp paper towel or fabric. Let it cool.

Knead the cooled dough until it's smooth. Roll it out and cut out shapes using cookie cutters. Use a plastic drinking straw to make holes for strings.

You can let the ornaments air dry (over night) or bake them in the oven. To bake them, preheat oven to 210/100 degrees. Bake for approximately 30 min to 1 hour. Turn the ornaments over a couple of times during the baking.

If you like, you can paint the ready ornaments, draw on them, stamp or whatever you come up with.

Tämä on kyllä tosi helppo ja hyvä taikina. Tehtiin tänään uudestaan ja tarkensin vielä ohjetta. Kannattaa kokeilla!

Ihana taikina , aineet ostettu , huomenna 'leivotaan' :) Sinulla on erittäin ihana, idearikas, innostava blogi ! Löysin tänne joku aika sitten ja kahlasin silloin läpi koko blogin. Nyt käyn usein tarkistamassa kuulumisiasi. :) -Samater-

Thank you for this wonderful idea, do you know how long the keep for? Am I right in assuming you'd store them in an airtight container? Thanks again.

Hi Kate! I would assume they will keep just fine "forever". All the moisture is gone from the dough after baking them. I would recommend keeping the ornaments in a cardboard box or similar, not airtight, when not using using them. Just in case there's any moisture left - it will be able to evaporate then.

I hope this was useful. Glad you like the tutorial! :)

Thanks so much Maija, I have stocked up on ingredients and we're going to have a go this weekend :D The weather is rainy again so appropriate for making Christmas decorations even though we're down under.

Hei Taina! Kiitos kommentista ja ohjeesta. Taikataikinaa muovailtiin mun omassa lapsuudessakin.

Blogisi on muutenkin mainio, kiitos ihanien ideoiden jakamisesta!

Voi miten mukava kuulla, kiitos Heidi!

I am used to working with polymer clay but, I'm thinking of trying this since I'm making ornaments from my daughters hand prints. The polymer clay just isn't taking the print. I'm wondering though, can this dough be glazed after baking? I assume it can if it can be painted.

Maija said...

Hi Kim, thanks for your comment. You could try adding some spray varnish, for example. You don't want to add too much water on it, or else they will "melt".

Kiitos kivasta ohjeesta! :) Tässä omat tuotokseni ohjeesi pohjalta:

Hienoa, K! Hyvältä näyttää :)

Hi arenee! Thanks for leaving a comment, I'm sure this is useful information to other readers, too! I pressed the leaf prints before baking - the dough will be hard afterwards. I hope this helped :) Happy holidays!

Hi there
Beautiful and clever idea! I plan to make these with my class🎄
I would like to make the dough in advance...would it still be pliable in the morning if I make it the night before and store it in an airtight container?
Thank you for sharing these fantastic inventions!

Maija said...

Hi Valerie! I haven't tried storing the dough, but would imagine it would be okay if you made it the night before :) Thanks for commenting and I hope you'll have fun crafting! :)

They keep forever. I made them in 2015 and just wrapped in tissue paper. They don't go bad.

Hi there,
I am trying to make these but they crack every time I end up putting then in the oven, I tried leaving out to air dry but they don't set hard properly and still get little cracks in them

Maija said...

Hi twitch11,

Sorry to hear about the trouble you're having. Unfortunately I don't know the reason to the cracks :( I've used this recipe many times and it's worked really well. Perhaps yours was too dry? I hope you'll get it right!
